Influenza Update
There seems to be no clear pattern for which Virginia campuses are seeing higher numbers of suspected cases of the novel H1N1 virus at the start of flu season. Universities and colleges reported the following number of flulike illnesses since the beginning of the fall semester: VA Military Institute – 125; Virginia Commonwealth University – 125; University of Virginia – 509; University of Richmond – 129; William and Mary – 46; Longwood University – 60; Randolph-Macon College – 9; Washington and Lee – 48; VA State University – 6. How many of these cases really are the flu is not clear because most colleges, following health department direction, are not testing all students. Instead, they're keeping tallies on the number coming to health centers with flulike illnesses. So far, most cases have been mild with only a few hospitalizations reported. But colleges still are braced for what may be to come with the virus, which has hit young people especially hard.
