Great Expectations Education Forum

Bestselling author Andrew Bridge, First Lady Anne Holton and Virginia's foster youth participated in the first Great Expectations Education Forum on Sept. 13 at Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens. More than 200 people gathered for remarks from Bridge and a listening session with foster youth. Students were from John Tyler, J. Sargeant Reynolds and Southside Virginia Community Colleges.

About Great Expectations

The Virginia Foundation for Community College Education is implementing Great Expectations, a transitional education program to help teenagers in the foster care system.

Specific goals include:

  • To help youth complete high school and transition into higher education.
  • To increase awareness about the value of a community college education.
  • To increase enrollment in Independent Living Programs.
  • To increase the number of foster youth who gain employment in desirable jobs.
  • To pilot after school programs at all community colleges for younger foster care youth.

Support Great Expectations

  • Contribute to an endowment that will sustain the program
  • Ensure all foster youth in Virginia have access to programs that will help them be successful

Chancellor's Summer Tour for Great Expectations

The Chancellor successfully biked across Virginia June 27 - July 11 to spread the word about Great Expectations, a program to enable foster youth to successfully pursue postsecondary education and training.
