Good Housekeeping Magazine Promotes a Virginia Community College as a Way to “Send Your Kid to College Without Going Broke”

Richmond – Good Housekeeping magazine, long known for its “Seal of Approval,” product reviews and money-saving tips, is highlighting one of Virginia’s Community Colleges in its November edition.  In an article entitled, “Send Your Kid to College Without Going Broke,” Piedmont Virginia Community College is used as an example of a community college that is offering “demanding classes” for “the growing ranks of smart kids who can’t afford four-year universities.”

The article ranks attending a community college and then transferring to a four-year institution as “Strategy #1” for families seeking “huge dollar savings” on college costs, and says “there are some real benefits to community colleges, such as smaller classes.”

The story highlights Steve Traylor of Troy, Virginia who “saved $14,000 by attending Piedmont Virginia Community College and living at home.  Last year, the chemical-engineering major transferred to the top-ranked University of Virginia, where he has maintained a GPA of 3.8.”

"Increasingly, students are choosing economy and excellence by completing their first two years at our college," commented Frank Friedman, PVCC president. "Our tuition and fees are one-third that of public four-year schools in Virginia, and we're a commuter school, so students incur no expense for room and board. Students receive a quality education at a significant savings."

“Providing more and more people with affordable access to higher education is our top priority,” said Glenn DuBois, chancellor of Virginia’s Community Colleges.  “Serving as an on-ramp to a four-year degree is an important part of that mission, and we are working hard to spread the word about our unprecedented transfer agreements.”
