RICHMOND – The State Board for Community Colleges will convene its regular meeting on Thursday, May 22, 2008, at 9 a.m. in the 15th floor Godwin-Hamel Board Room in the James Monroe Building, 101 N. 14th Street, Richmond.
Committees for the State Board will meet on Wednesday, May 21, also in the James Monroe Building. The Academic, Student Affairs and Workforce Development Committee and the Budget and Finance Committee meet at 1:30 p.m.; the Facilities Committee and Audit Committee meet at 3 p.m.; and the Personnel Committee meets at 3:30 p.m. The Executive Committee will meet following the Facilities and Personnel meetings.
Agenda items for the regular business meeting on Thursday include:
Budget and Finance – The State Board will set tuition and fee rates for Virginia’s Community Colleges for 2008-2009. Resolutions will also be considered that would request that the VCCS be allowed more autonomy in capital outlay, information technology and other areas under the Higher Education Restructuring Act.
Presentation – President Terry Suarez of Mountain Empire Community College will make a special presentation on the Achieving the Dream project.
Chancellor’s Report – Chancellor Glenn DuBois will recognize the recipients of the 2008 Outstanding Faculty Award: Professor of Physics Walerian Majewski of Northern Virginia Community College and Professor of English Brent Kendrick of Lord Fairfax Community College.
Academic, Student Affairs & Workforce – The State Board will consider two new programs, including an Aviation Maintenance Technology associate’s degree at Blue Ridge Community College and a networking major for an Information Systems Technology degree at Germanna Community College. The State Board will also consider several revisions to the Policy Manual in the areas of reissuing diplomas, repeating courses and grading for developmental courses. A case study on the role of Virginia’s Community Colleges in workforce development will also be presented.
Facilities – The State Board will act on a revised master plan for the Northern Virginia Community College Manassas Campus and a schematic review of a proposal to renovate instructional labs at New River Community College. An update on the 2008-2010 capital budget will be discussed as well as a status report on capital outlay projects.
Personnel – The State Board will act on faculty salary scales and on presidential salary scales.
