State Board Agenda for July 2008 Business Meeting
RICHMOND – The State Board for Community Colleges will convene its regular meeting on Thursday, July17, 2008, at 9 a.m. in the 15th floor Godwin-Hamel Board Room in the James Monroe Building, 101 N. 14th Street, Richmond.
Committees will meet on Wednesday, July 16, also in the James Monroe Building. The Academic, Student Affairs and Workforce Development Committee and the Budget and Finance Committee meet at 1:30 p.m.; the Facilities Committee and Audit Committee meet at 3 p.m.; and the Personnel Committee meets at 3:30 p.m.
Agenda items for the regular business meeting on Thursday include:
Academic, Student Affairs & Workforce – The State Board will consider a new associate’s degree in engineering at JTCC designed for articulation with the University of Virginia’s engineering program. It also meets requirements for transfer to Virginia Tech’s engineering program. The State Board will also consider a new associate of applied science in human services at TCC and a proposed certificate in exercise science and personal training at VWCC.
Facilities – The State Board will consider approval of a bikeway/walking trail system at Wytheville Community College and will consider approval of the schematic site design of a Regional Health Professions Center at TCC’s Virginia Beach Campus.
Budget and Finance – The State Board will consider approval of a business plan for construction of a recreational center at BRCC, including an increase in student fees beginning in summer 2009.
Chancellor’s Report – The Chancellor will introduce several award-winning faculty & staff members:
- Walerian Majewski, professor of physics at NVCC, is the recipient of the SCHEV 2008 Outstanding Faculty Award.
- Richard Groover, assistant professor of biology at JSRCC, is the recipient of the 2008-10 Chancellor’s Professorship. He will complete a project on independent research by community college students.
- Kim Blosser, dean of math, physical sciences and technology at BRCC, receives a Chancellor’s Fellowship to complete a doctorate in higher education administration from Nova Southeastern University.
- Christy Hawkins, assistant professor of health at TNCC, receives a Chancellor’s Fellowship to complete a doctoral degree in education at ODU.
- Cheryl Terry, director of business and industry services at DCC, receives a Chancellor’s Fellowship to complete a doctoral degree in career and technical education from ODU.
- Florence Linton, financial aid office manager at TCC, receives a Chancellor’s Fellowship to complete a bachelor’s degree from ODU.
- Laura Stevens, enrollment specialist at VWCC, receives a Chancellor’s Fellowship to complete a master’s degree at ODU.
